This year brings several new, talented writers to our magazine:
Joan Reis Nielsen, an esteemed food writer who has co-authored the book, The Great Coffee Book, will be visiting at least six unique roaster-retailers throughout the world, and revealing their philosophies, marketing angles and their passion for coffee, for our new series, “World Class Cafes.” This month she interviews the owners of Catalina Coffee Co. in Redondo Beach, California.
Brooke Locascio, a former Starbucks barista and assistant manager, will give is an insider’s look on the various methods and policies her store undertook in ensuring the satisfaction of the customer. She begins the first of a 6-part series this month.
David DeCandia, tea and coffee buyer for The International Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, a muti-national specialty retailer, write for us quarterly on the applicable facets of the tea industry - including this month’s “How to Choose a Tea Supplier,” a piece on how to train a tea barista, and other tea subjects.
They join our regular distinguished writers who help make this magazine the best-read international voice of the coffee and tea industry. We thank them in advance for their help in bringing the most pertinent information to the trade.
Despite all of the good things that came our way, last year was a sad year as we mourned the deaths of several key people in the coffee and tea industry: Hans von Gimborn of Probat Werke; Peter Kuhn of Gebruder Wollenhaupt, Tom Walker of NYBOT, and, most recently, John Starr of BUNN.
The Tea & Coffee Trade Journal was working with Hans von Gimborn on a one-of-a-kind book on the history of coffee roasting, Nota Bene: Coffee Roasting Machines. The book is now available and I urge those interested in the art of coffee roasting to read this magnificent history detailing the evolution of the coffee roasting machine over the centuries, written by one of, if not the most, knowledgeable man on coffee roasting.
We bend the ear of Coffee Fest’s David Heilbrunn on page 64, who has now held 12 successful Coffee Fest conventions in North America. He tells us attendance continues to grow (exhibitors were up 17% from 2002) - and that it’s quality people who visit the retail-oriented show. Coffee Fest is partnering with The Great Dessert Expo in Las Vegas this June. Says Heilbrunn, “It will be all under the same roof, and there will be one admission price. There will be separate entrances, but if you’re on a cross aisle, you can go from coffee to dessert without really noticing the difference. We think that for our exhibitors it’s a wonderful thing, because it brings the dessert expo attendee, which is a little different than ours.”
The Speciality Coffee Association of Europe is holding their SCAE 3rd World Specialty Conference & Exhibition in conjunction with the Rimini Trade Fair at the end of this month. The SCAE now boosts over 600 members and continues its mission to spread coffee education throughout Europe. We interview SCAE president, Vincenzo Sandalj, on page 46.
