Dethlefsen & Balk, suppliers to the specialty tea trade from Hamburg, Germany, have expanded their presence into the U.S. in Aurora, Illinois.

Dethlefsen & Balk provides a wide selection of premium loose-leaf teas and accessories, as well as flavored teas and tisanes. Accessories include porcelain, glass, ironware, and goods for in-store use, like packaging bags, personal teabags, strainers and storage containers. All goods are stored, shipped and priced to relieve customers of previous importing hassles from Germany, like shipping coordination, custom duties and vague estimations on delivery time.

According to the company’s general manager, Sascha Karimpour, “We differentiate from other tea suppliers by being an actual tea producer whose only business is to wholesale directly to specialty tea retail stores and salons. We probably offer the largest selection of unique tea accessories worldwide - anything from tea timers to storage tins. We are a one-stop shop.”

Dethlefsen & Balk flavor their teas in Germany and use only premium flavors (no artificial additives) to reach the maximum freshness. The teas are heat-sealed in aroma-safe triple-layered foil to maximize shelf life. Oren’s Celebrates 20 Years

Oren’s Daily Roast, one of New York City’s premier specialty coffee roasters, is celebrating 20 years in the business. To share the celebration, Oren’s Daily Roast offered discounted brewed and whole bean coffees.

The original Oren’s Daily Roast, which opened for business in 1986, housed the coffee roaster, green bean storage, as well as a retail shop. Now, the company has nine retail locations in Manhattan, and sells coffee beans, teas, coffee/tea accessories, and coffee/espresso beverages. Oren’s maintains a roasting facility in Jersey City, New Jersey, which roasts beans every weekday for the company’s retail stores and wholesale customers. The company also does a large online and mail order business.

Oren’s Daily Roast has been ranked “Best Cup of Coffee in New York,” twice by New York Magazine and also by Wine Spectator Magazine.

Green Coffee Association To Hold New Orleans Convention

The Green Coffee Association has rescheduled their convention, which was cancelled after the Hurricane Katrina damage in September 2005 in New Orleans. They will now hold their convention June 8-11, 2006 at the Royal Sonesta in New Orleans. The annual golf outing will be held, October 16th at the Maplewood Country Club in New Jersey.

Q Auction Schedule in 2006

The 2006 Q Auction schedule includes Q Auctions for five Central American countries, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The schedule is as follows (please note dates are subject to change):
  • 7 March 2006 Nicaragua Q Auction
  • 14 March 2006 El Salvador Q Auction
  • 28 March 2006 Guatemala Q Auction
  • 27 April 2006 Honduras Q Auction
This will be the third year for the Q Auctions, which have facilitated the transaction of more than two million pounds of specialty coffee, with 100% of Q Auction proceeds staying in origin countries. In addition, more than $50,000 has been reinvested into coffee communities through the “Q Auction 2% Fund.” The Q Coffee Program has enabled coffee producers to earn premiums versus traditional markets, as well as gain access to new customers and markets.

Coffees are evaluated by Licensed Q Graders, who are individuals that have successfully passed a rigorous two-day exam using methodology developed by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA). In addition, the coffees must have no primary defects and no more than five secondary defects.

The top seven scoring lots per country will be available through a Q Auction, with registration opening approximately one month before the auction date. Full farmer profiles and information, along with sample request forms, are also available on the auction site, which is accessible through www.coffeeinstitute.org. As an added feature this year, information about additional Q Coffees not offered through an auction will be posted to the site for those buyers wishing to purchase Q Coffees outside of the auction format.

The Q Coffee Program was developed by The Coffee Quality Institute to provide a market alternative to the commodities market. The program guarantees quality, while incorporating transparency and social responsibility.

The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) is a non-profit organization, working internationally to improve the quality of coffee and the lives of the people that produce it. In addition to the Q Coffee Program, its programs include Coffee Corps and the Women in Coffee Leadership Program.

Van Lauren: Fire Extinguishes Brand New Facility

This past December, soluble coffee manufacturer, Van Lauren Beverages, lost their brand new facility to a fire. Fifty firefighters worked for more than 24 hours to extinguish the blaze in the Camford Way, Sundon packing and distribution facility.

Maurice Stimler, Van Lauren’ s managing director, estimated that the fire has costed the firm approximately £6 - £7 million. Van Lauren, which supplies private label coffee to supermarkets across the U.K. and other countries, was moved from its London headquarters to the specially built warehouse in Luton, Bedforshire just a few months ago.

However, despite this misfortune, the company didn’t miss a beat. All customers continue to successfully be supplied, as the company has sub-contracted the packing out. Van Lauren Beverages intends to rebuild in England, as soon as possible.

The Spice Merchant Celebrates 25 Years

Specialty coffee roaster, The Spice Merchant, is celebrating 25 years of business. In 1980, owners Bob and Sue Boewe opened the shop selling coffee, tea and spices in a 400-sq. ft. back end of a storefront in Kansas, and within six months they were forced to move into a 3,000-sq. ft. store, adding accessories and some gourmet foods to the collection. Bob Boewe explained the company’s account and history in the industry: “We only work with Royal Coffee, to make sure that we have the very best green coffee for roasting. In 1985, we installed a Sivetz coffee roaster to ensure complete control over quality and freshness. Within two months, the coffee market went crazy because of a drought in Brazil, in which green coffee prices almost doubled. I thought that I had made the biggest business mistake of our lives. We then reassured our customers that we would provide great coffee at fair prices.”

In 1994, the company purchased an adjacent historical manufacturing plant housing 10,000-sq. ft., and expanded their product lines to include 150+ bulk teas, 40+ roasted coffees and about 160 bulk herbs and spices, and some gourmet foods.

16th Santos Coffee Seminar

The Santos Commercial Association, sponsors of the Santos International Coffee Seminars, will hold its bi-annual seminar May 16-19, 2006 at the Casa Grande Hotel in Guaruja, Brazil.

The theme of this year’s seminar is: “World Coffee Consumption and Production in the Next 10 Years.” Leading figures of the Brazilian and international coffee trade and allied interests will make presentations on different aspects of the theme, such as: “Consumption in Producing Countries,” “Supply and Demand,” “What Qualities Consumers Will Require,” “Brazil Crop Statistics and Predictions” and “The Coffee Agribusiness Vision of the Brazilian Government.”

Franke Takes Over Coffeetech AG

Franke has completed its acquisition of the Swiss service retailer, Coffeetech AG, which is located in Berikon, Zürich. Since 1990, Coffeetech has been a service retailer of Franke Kaffeemaschinen AG.

With the acquisition of this service organization, Franke is continuing to pursue its aim of achieving worldwide representation in key markets with its own sales and service organization. This take-over is a further step towards being able to offer optimal service in Switzerland.
