Probat Names Regional U.S. Sales Representatives
Probat Burns, Inc., manufacturers of roasting equipment and based in Memphis, Tennessee, has named East and West Coast sales representatives for the U.S.

Launtia Taylor of The Taylor Gentles Group will represent the company’s line of specialty coffee roasters such as shop roasters and small production size roasters including one- and two-bag units. She covers the East Coast sales area.

Taylor has been working with Probat Burns Group since 1998.

STI Appointments
The Specialty Tea Institute has just named four new members to the Advisory Board. New directors are: Pearl Dexter - Tea A Magazine, Scotland, CT; Richard Guzauskas - China Mist/Leaves Pure Teas, Phoenix, AZ; George Jage - Take Me 2 Tea Expo, Las Vegas, NV; and Jennifer Peterson - Carnelian Rose Tea Co, Vancouver, WA.

They will each serve a two year term joining the four remaining current members of the Board: Mim Enck - The East Indies Co., Lebanon, PA; Vic Ferretti - Kentea Limited, New Rochelle, NY; Shashank Goel, chairman - Ambootia Tea, Chicago, IL; and Mike Spillane - The G.S. Haly Company, Redwood City, CA.

Torani Expands its Sales & Marketing Efforts
R. Torre & Company/Torani has added three new team members to continue building its sales and marketing efforts.

Eric Gould joins Torani as retail sales manager. In his newly created position, he will continue to develop Torani’s retail business and division. Most recently, Eric was with the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company for nine years as head of their specialty division. Eric comes to Torani with a great mix of retail experience with leading brands, including Johnson & Johnson, Keebler and Nestle. Eric will be based in Southern California. Pamela Resser over 12 years of marketing experience, she has lead the development and management of highly successful brands for top global companies, such as Frito-Lay, Del Monte Foods and Ralston Purina Company. Her most recent position was as product director with Visa USA in San Francisco. At Torani, Pamela will be tasked with building Torani’s brand equities and developing strategic partnerships

SCAA Atlanta Awards
Bronwen Serna, 26, from Hines Public Market Coffee in Seattle, Washington, was named the 2004 United States Barista Champion. Serna won the title, a $1,000 prize and a trip to Trieste, Italy to represent the United States at the World Barista Championships, June 18-20. The U.S. Barista Championships in Atlanta featured 33 expert baristas, those talented people who master espresso machines and make coffee and espresso-drink making a profession. The competition encourages and recognizes professional achievement in the art and skill of espresso beverage preparation and service.

During the competition, the best baristas from across the country battled and demonstrated the art of espresso-making, creating some of the world’s finest coffee concoctions. Competitors navigated through a maze of judges and photographers while maintaining composure preparing and servicing 12 coffee concoctions - four espressos, four cappuccinos, and four specialty coffee drinks of their own creation - all within a 15-minute timeframe.

The SCAA also recognized leading experts and professionals who have made outstanding contributions to the specialty coffee industry:

Lifetime Achievement Award - Michael Sivetz, author of two well-respected books, including “Coffee Technology” and “Coffee Quality.” Sivetz has more than 50 years experience in coffee roasting and science.

Service to the Association - Jamie Utendorf-Hagen, who has more than 23 years experience in brand development, marketing and purchasing in the wholesale and retail specialty coffee and foods segment.

Special Recognition - Jeremy Woods, who recently retired from New York-based coffee importer Atlantic (USA) Inc., where he served as vice president.

Special Recognition - Martin I. Elkin, one of specialty coffee’s first teachers/mentors, a renowned roaster and a packaging innovator.

Distinguished Author - Maja Wallengren, a self-educated coffee correspondent, Wallengren has traveled to more than 300 coffee farms across three continents, and she has reported on a variety of coffee issues. Wallengren is a regular contributor to Tea & Coffee Trade Journal and Tea & Coffee Asia.
