Modern Process Equipment

The organic coffee, flavored coffee and teas market continues to grow. Many coffee roasters and tea packers are extending their product lines to better adapt to consumer needs. This month's produce showcase features some of the newest offerings from specialty tea and coffee companies - and a cookie to accompany both beverages.
White Cloud Releases LifeFoods Organic Coffee Line
White Cloud Coffee has introduced its LifeFoods certified organic coffee line. OCIA (Organic Crop Improvement Association) certified, the LifeFoods line is garnishing considerable interest from grocery stores, natural foods retailers, co-ops and espresso shops throughout the U.S.

Roasted by specialty coffee roaster, White Cloud Coffee, LifeFoods uses only 100% OCIA-certified, shade-grown, high altitude organic Arabica beans, and uniquely fluid-bed air roasts them, providing retailers and consumers with a “cleaner” organic roast, free from coffee dust and coffee debris associated with typical drum roasting methods.

“This line shows that a great cup of coffee can not only make a difference in your own health, and those of your customers, but also in the health of the environment. The LifeFoods line is free from pesticides and herbicides, and promotes sustainable farming methods such as shading, terracing, composting, and biological controls, in place of the usual agricultural chemicals,” said Jerome Eberharter, White Cloud c.e.o.

Green Mountain Expands Fair Trade and Organic Line
Green Mountain Coffee, Inc., has integrated its coffees formerly marketed under the Frontier Organic Coffee brand into its line of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Fair Trade and organic certified coffee line. This creates one of the broadest selections of double-certified specialty coffee available in the U.S. under one brand. Green Mountain Coffee, Inc. acquired the Frontier Organic Coffee brand from Frontier Natural Products Co-op of Norway, Iowa, in June 2001.

Green Mountain Coffee’s extensive line of double-certified coffees includes single-origin, blends, dark roasts, Swiss Water Process decaffeinated, and flavored coffees. The Fair Trade and organic certified selections are offered in a wide variety of formats to meet customer needs, including bulk, 10-oz. and 12-oz. bags, institutional fractional packages, retail fractional packages, and in the Keurig K-Cup.

“The expansion of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters’ Fair Trade and organic product line enhances the Company’s standing in the growing natural foods market segment,” said T.J. Whalen, director of brand and market development for Green Mountain Coffee.

Reunion Island Launches “A New Office Coffee Adventure”
Reunion Island Coffee is now launching its specialty Private Reserve brand with an OCS support program. The specialty coffee roaster offers a combination of retail-style packaging, marketing materials, sales tools and incentives. The company is courting one exclusive OCS partner from among the top independent operators in each market.

The Private Reserve brand includes 10 exotic blends and single-origin coffees created by roastmaster Peter Pesce. “More and more consumers are demanding specialty coffee in the office,” Pesce observes, “OCS operators can improve quality and raise pack weights to meet this demand, increasing per-cup revenues despite the economic slowdown.”

To create a program that would meet real-world needs, Pesce hired directors with backgrounds in OCS sales and marketing. Stand-up portion packages and display boxes build consumer-level brand awareness and loyalty. Branded thermos wraps, description cards, danglers and paper cups increase consumption by creating a “café in the office” impression.

The Private Reserve sales process involves using a brochure and sample on cold calls and following up with a product menu and written proposal. “Salespeople like to sell what’s easy,” business development director Tim Cook comments, “This program has enabled salespeople to achieve close rates as high as 70%.” Combining these tools with sales incentives for salespeople and route drivers, Reunion Island takes a hands-on approach to building successful partnerships.

The company has aggressive plans to build a cooperative network of partner businesses in every major U.S. market within the next 12 months.
